Here’s What Your Go-To Yoga Pose Reveals About You

Just like our affection for certain types of yoga, we often find ourselves rolling our eyes at a pose we just don’t like for whatever reason, while joyously indulging in another. How we interpret our yoga practice differs based on many factors.

For instance, someone who might like more power in their practice can find Chaturanga Dandasana, or Low Plank, to be utterly empowering, while someone who is more focused on a restorative practice might find Balasana, or Child’s Pose to be their best friend.

But have you ever thought about how our celebration of certain poses can provide us insight into the type of people we are, too?

Take a look at what your go-to yoga pose reveals about your personality below:

Standing Poses:

Those who prefer standing poses such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose) and Utkatasana (Chair Pose) are typically pragmatic people who prefer to stand tall with both feet planted firmly on the ground. You are a down-to-earth person in all aspects of your being, whether it be on or off your mat, and consistently remain steadfast in your beliefs and outlooks.

Balance Poses:

If you love asanas like Vriksasana (Tree Pose), Garudasana (Eagle Pose) and Dancer Pose, you are the type who loves the juxtaposition of being grounded yet also trying something that could indeed throw your footing off, in hopes of discovering something new about yourself and your abilities. In other aspects of your life, it means you seek to accomplish a greater sense of balance in order to be the best you can be. Moreover, you’re not afraid to fall – you’ll simply dust it off and try again.

Backbends:

Asanas like Dhanurasana (Wheel Pose), Ustrasana (Camel Pose) and Mermaid Pose are indicative of someone who leads with an open heart. You are compassionate towards others, and find yourself downright vulnerable to your emotions. Your heart is the controller of your actions and the key to your being, and you find the utmost power radiates from yourself when you expose it in heart-opening yoga poses.

Forward Bends:

Are you a fan of forward bends like Child’s Pose, Downward-Facing Dog and Janu Sirsasana (Head-to-Knee Pose)? People who prefer forward bends are known to have a well-rounded perspective on life. You rarely reveal a frazzled state of being because your temper remains even-keeled. You’re also the type who takes it all in, preferring to keep your thoughts introverted, where you can reflect passively.

Arm Balances:

Arm balances like Side Crow, Side Plank, and Peacock Pose are favored among those who prefer to express their playful, bold and fearless side. Your confidence reigns in all aspects of your life – not even the thought of falling flat on your face can keep you from testing your limits.

Hip Openers:

If you like to go for poses like Pigeon Pose or Full Splits, then you’re not afraid of testing your body’s limits in the face of a little discomfort. You’re driven by the knowledge that reaching a peak posture like one of these will leave you with more satisfaction than suffering. The hips are known to harbor a great deal of emotions, so your affection for such poses proves that you are untroubled and welcoming of your deepest feelings – therefore you aren’t one to shy away from testing the waters.

Corpse Pose:

Savasana, or Corpse Pose, is the epitome of letting go; of stillness in its entirety. While some people have a difficult time in this asana, others look forward to it throughout class. Those who relish in the thought of simply lying down and being still may be the ones most in need of some serious R&R in their lives. You might be yearning for quiet time in other parts of your life, due to the demands of a job, family, social activities and more. And if you do find yourself thinking about all you get to escape during this pose, you ought to ensure you take the necessary steps to give yourself more peace and quiet in your everyday existence so you can truly let go and love this pose even more than you already do.

Having a favorite of anything seems to be something from our childhood years. Whether it’s our favorite color, our favorite flavor of ice cream, our favorite season (wasn’t it always summer?), a favorite friend, or our favorite food, it seems to be a bit trivial, taking away from the depth of the rest of that which is just as good in a different way.

But, just because we’re adults doesn’t mean we don’t find ourselves incessantly snagging that one pair of yoga pants for our class after work, and doing an internal victory dance when the teacher tells us we’re about to get into Natarajasana, or Dancer’s Pose. And that’s OK. So – what’s your favorite yoga pose? Share in the comments below!
