6 Natural and DIY Remedies for Cellulite

Cellulite is made up of fat cells that are deposited beneath the skin and are visible above the skin’s surface with a dimpled, cottage cheese-like appearance. Even fit and athletic men and women can get cellulite, so it is not just visible on those of us that tend to reach for that extra cookie (or two).
 
You do not need expensive cellulite creams with outlandish claims and unbelievable before and after photos to target cellulite. There are plenty of inexpensive, natural alternatives and Do It Yourself (DIY) treatments that you can try from the comfort of your home for just pennies on the dollar.

Even fit and athletic men and women can get cellulite.

Change your diet
What you eat affects the look and feel of your body, so if you have cellulite, a change in diet may help to reverse or prevent new cellulite from forming. Here are a few easy shifts you can make to your diet that can reduce the appearance of cellulite:

• Reduce your sugar and salt intake to reduce water retention and the expansion of fat cells after eating.

• Eat two tablespoons of flax each day to increase collagen production and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

• Add a tablespoon or two of cayenne pepper to your next meal to take advantage of its many positive effects on the body: fat-burning properties, increased blood circulation, boosts your metabolism, renews skin cells, and eliminates toxins from your body.

• Drink a cup of green tea with each meal to speed up your metabolism and prevent the production of fat-absorbing enzymes.

• Eating salmon or taking an Omega 3 supplement – the right kind of fat – can reduce cellulite over time.

• Eat fat to lose fat. Add a few teaspoons of coconut oil to your food or drinks each day to reduce inflammation, hydrate your body and skin, detox, and boost your metabolism.
 
 
Drink water
You have read it time and time again – drink more water. Water is essential for proper body functionality, but it also helps to flush out toxins, so drink your 8-10 (or more) glasses each day. Remember: if you are hydrated, so is your skin, and hydrated skin looks more evenly toned than dry or dehydrated skin. To increase your water intake without lugging around a water bottle 24/7, you can also eat foods with high water content, such as melon, cucumbers and celery.
 
 
Exercise
A healthy and fit body will naturally combat cellulite. So, whichever way you like to get your sweat on, keep it up and make sure that you make your physical fitness a priority. If you notice cellulite in specific areas, you can do targeted exercises to fight cellulite in those areas. For instance, if cellulite resides in your thighs, you might want to increase your Warriors or add some squats and lunges to the mix.
 
 
Exfoliate
Your skin gets tired and lifeless over time, but you can awaken it and encourage the growth of new cells through exfoliation. Dry brushing is a new craze for the reduction of cellulite that many people are doing up to twice each day, as it promotes improved blood flow, skin elasticity, and new cell growth. Before you shower (or when the skin is dry), use a brush made with natural stiff fibers and use long back and forth sweeps, scrubs and circles across your skin, starting at your feet and moving your way up your body towards your heart. Use more force on tough skin, such as feet or elbows, and less force on gentler skin, such as inner thighs and chest.
 

 
A good note: if your skin becomes red and inflamed, you are brushing too hard. If you are a coffee drinker, you can use your leftover coffee grinds to create a Do It Yourself coffee scrub. When used as a scrub, coffee grinds exfoliate your skin and stimulate blood flow to the area. The caffeine in coffee also has an instant tightening effect for smooth and supple skin!
 
To make your own coffee scrub at home, combine ½ cup coffee grinds, 6 tablespoons of sugar (any coarse type), 5 tablespoons of organic coconut oil, and a few drops of essential oil (such as lavender or peppermint) into a paste. Once well combined, massage with pressure into your desired area for several minutes, and then rinse clean. Repeat this process every few days to maintain the benefits. You can double or triple the recipe and store in a mason jar to keep within reach for several treatments.
 
 
Detox Bath
Once you are done dry brushing your body, now it’s time for a relaxing detox soak. At one point or another, you’ve probably been told to soak in an Epsom salt bath to ease muscle soreness and general body aches. The premise behind a detox bath is essentially the same as an Epsom salt bath, except in addition to reducing inflammation, a detox bath helps your body rid itself of toxins that have built up in your skin and fat tissues – a cause of cellulite. For the yogi that is constantly on the go, this 20-minute (or more) bath leaves you to your thoughts (or lack thereof), instead of being constantly connected to technology, while ridding your body of some of the yuckiness that has accumulated over time.
 
To make a detox bath, add equal parts Pink Himalayan Salt, Epson or Sea Salt, and Apple Cider Vinegar to a warm bath, as well as 10 drops of your favorite essential oil such as lavender. You will probably sweat during your detox bath, which is a sign that toxins are leaving your body, so keep a cool glass of lemon water and a chilled washcloth nearby to control your body temperature and help prevent dizziness.
 
 
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
Now that you have detoxed your body with that relaxing detox bath, you don’t want to put toxins back onto your skin. Your skin is comprised of more than 60% water, making it essentially a giant, living sponge that absorbs anything that it touches, so make sure to use natural and organic beauty and skincare products. An inexpensive and easy way to combat cellulite is to keep your skin moisturized with organic coconut oil or a mixture of juniper oil or tangerine oil and olive oil. Massage your oil of choice into your skin for 10 minutes morning and night, and you should see results in just a few weeks.
