What is Vedic Astrology? This Is How It Differs From Western Astrology

Astrology has its roots as far back as ancient Babylon. Even in those dusty, nearly forgotten times, looking up at the stars for guidance was commonplace. It should come as no surprise then, that other ancient civilizations also partook in astrology.

One such civilization was India, whose sages wrote up the Vedas. The Vedas are India’s ancient knowledge system. Like any other form of astrology, the Vedas held that stars and planets have great influence in our lives.

Spiritual growth is critical to Hindu life, and that growth must follow karma and dharma. Karma is their concept of a spiritual Newtonian law; every action has a consequence. Dharma is the idea that every life has a spiritual duty to fulfill; a purpose, if you will.

Karma’s More Than a B*tch: Here Are the 12 Laws of Karma Explained

In the Vedas, a person’s karma links directly with the stars and planets. Vedic astrology then, is a way for understanding your own karma through celestial bodies. Astrology can tell you a lot of things, like which are the funniest Zodiac signs.

What is Vedic Astrology?

Vedic astrology helps practitioners understand different aspects of life. Success in future prospects like marriage or a career are things Vedic astrology helps us with. Its other name is jyotish, which translates directly to “the science of light.”

The astrology Hindus practice includes taking different celestial bodies into account. This means they pay attention to Uranus retrograde or if Mars is rising. Things like this helped the practitioners of Vedic astrology do things like predict marriages. Some even predict the outcomes of war!

Eastern vs. Western Astrology: The Main Differences

Typically, East versus West culture differs in fundamental philosophy. You can find a lot of differences between Eastern and Western civilizations.

Such differences are often the result of the differences in the values espoused by their philosophers. You couldn’t get much more different than a comparison between Confucius and, say, Hegel.

A similar difference is present in their astrology. If you compare Vedic and Western astrology, the primary difference is in their constellations. As the stars move across the sky, the same constellations are apparent to both Vedic and Western astrologers.

However, Earth’s spin on its axis experiences a wobble. Such a wobble has another name: precession. Precession tilts the Earth’s ecliptic plane. When that happens, a full wobble will complete in 26,000 years. Our ecliptic plane shifts 1 degree every 72 years.

A primary difference is Vedic astrology takes the precession into account. Because of this, their horoscopes depend on the updated ecliptic path. Western astrology stuck with the original path. It’s not quite as astronomically accurate, so Western astrology focuses more on symbolism.

A Common Astrology Question: Do We Control Our Own Fates?

According to the Vedas, only two things play into your future. Those two things are destiny and free will. Their holy text finds that destiny is the situation you find yourself in. This could be any situation in your life: a traffic jam, a marriage, even a fight.

Your free will is how you react to those situations. Both your thoughts and actions count towards your free will. Every reaction creates your karma; every karma prompts you to make more choices. In summary, your free will makes your destiny.

Vedic astrology helps draw an abstract map of our karma and our dharma.

To answer the question, yes! We do control our own fates, despite the implication of influence from stars. Vedic astrology helps draw an abstract map of our karma and our dharma. Often, a number of people make the mistake of thinking their destiny is uncontrollable.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Lots of people who run deep into Vedic astrology will make the mistake of blaming the stars for their fate. As will a lot of other people who get into astrology.

Vedic Astrology: A Map To Our Soul’s Karma and Dharma

People make a common mistake when practicing astrology. They think the stars directly control our destinies. They really don’t; they’re merely influences.

Anybody who’s ever actually taken an in-depth look at personalities should know. Zodiac sign personalities aren’t inescapable. Aries doesn’t have to be headstrong all the time; they just usually are. Cancers aren’t always sensitive; they might harden themselves in response to trauma.

We do control our fates; astrology is here to guide us along the way.
