4 Easy, Effective Tips to Relieve Your Dry Winter Skin (Ahhhh… That’s Better)

Dry skin in winter is a major problem for many of us. The humidity outside is low and indoor heating systems only make matters worse. Come on! Can’t we catch a break? Luckily, there are great home remedies for dry skin.

As the seasons change, our skin care routine should too.

In a WebMD article, Canyon Ranch esthetician Bonnie LaPlante explains that “As soon as you turn the heat on indoors, the skin starts to dry out. It doesn’t matter if you heat your home using oil, wood, or electricity. The skin gets dry.”

So, how can we fight dry skin in winter? Read on for simple yet effective tips!

Kiss Dry Skin in Winter Goodbye! Use These 4 Home Remedies for Dry Skin:

The winter weather may be unbearable, but your skin doesn’t have to be! Upgrade your skin care regimen with these four tips to get rid of scaly, dry skin:

1. Install a Humidifier in Your Home

Heating systems dry out the air. And the drier the air, the drier your skin. A humidifier puts moisture back into the air, which helps your skin stay hydrated.

For best results, put the humidifier in the room you spend the most time.

2. Change Your Diet

Adding more healthy fats in your diet, such as walnuts, olive oil, and avocados, will naturally increase the amount of moisture in your skin.

“Avocados contain an abundance of Vitamin E and monounsaturated fats – specifically Omega-6 fats – that keep the skin moist and prevent the skin from aging,” says John Diaz, MD, a skin health expert.

Steer clear of alcohol, caffeine, and coffee – all of which are diuretics that will dehydrate your skin.

3. Wear Sunscreen

When it comes to getting rid of dry skin in winter, many people forget one very important step in their skin care routine: sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief, sunscreen should be applied all year long – not just during summertime.

“Winter sun – combined with snow glare – can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside,” WebMD reports. “Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.”

Good skin care is just as much about protection as it is about maintenance.

4. Skip the Long, Hot Showers

Hot water depletes your skin’s lipid layer. Skin care experts recommend keeping the temperature warm and try to keep the shower less than five minutes.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “Relieving dry skin is sometimes as simple as changing your shower routine. While most people tend to take hot showers, these can scald the skin and cause damage.”

Also, when you’re drying off with a towel, don’t rub. Pat lightly to lock in more moisture.

Banish Dry Skin in Winter for Good!

Nothing is worse than cracked, dry skin. And in the wintertime, it often feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle.

Maintaining good skin health is about more than using a good moisturizer – it’s about making smarter lifestyle choices, adopting healthier habits, and being committed to see them through!
