Harness the Moon’s Potent Energy With These New and Full Moon Rituals

All matter moves with the Moon’s energy, reminding us that we are a part of something much bigger. When we incorporate moon rituals into our lives, we can deeply connect to and harness the potent energy of the moon.

The Moon has a powerful influence on us as spiritual bodies since it is the closest astronomical body to us. The Full Moon offers the most profound energies that we can absorb, while the New Moon is the next most powerful energy.

The Moon is powerful, and connecting with her rhythm guides us to find the inherent wisdom and truth within ourselves.

One way to connect to the powerful Moon energy is through Moon rituals. We can use the Moon’s energy to help set our intentions and clear negativity. In this article, we will explore the meaning of the moon phases and share ideas for both new and full moon rituals.

Learn All About Moon Phases and Corresponding Moon Rituals

We will discuss the two most powerful Moon phases to perform your rituals: the New Moon and the Full Moon.

The Moon is powerful, and connecting with her rhythm guides us to find the inherent wisdom and truth within ourselves.

Both New and Full Moon rituals can be simple and do not need not be time-consuming. When preparing for your ritual, focus more on the intention and commitment instead of the supplies and details.

The New Moon: Its Meaning and Unique Energy

The New Moon (or Dark Moon) is not visible to us because the Sun’s light is not shining on the Earth’s side of the Moon.

The New Moon phase represents rebirth. If you connect with the Moon’s energy during this time, you can nourish the seed or intention that you are ready to grow.

The New Moon energy will help create fertile ground for your seed to grow, so take time to nourish and heal your body, mind, and spirit. As this time is about new beginnings, allow yourself the opportunity to put thought into the intentions, dreams, and goals of your future.

Practice This New Moon Ritual

The New Moon is only truly new for an instant, but it appears as a New Moon from Earth for approximately 3.5 days. It is important to establish your vision during this time.

Again, you do not need many supplies or elaborate details – things like a journal and sage to clear the energy will be enough to get you started.

Follow These 3 Steps to Prepare for Your New Moon Ritual:

1. Create a Sacred Space

First create an ambience that makes you feel calm, centered, and rooted. You may feel more grounded by quickly cleaning up, laying out a tapestry or unrolling your yoga mat.

Feel free to diffuse essential oils or add pillows, candles, salt, crystals, shells, photos, etc. to your space. Each New Moon will mean something different to you, so the space you create may change or evolve over time.

2. Gather Your Thoughts and Intentions

A strong intention will create a more rewarding outcome. This is the most important part of your New Moon ritual, and a great opportunity to begin journaling.

The New Moon’s energy makes it the optimal time to set goals, grow new ideas and change current habits or thought patterns.

The best approach is to set goals and intentions that can come to fruition within the next 14 days.

The 14 days leading up to the Full Moon is the best time to fulfill your vision and find support for your intention. As the Moon increases its power and intensity towards the Full Moon, your intentions will grow as well.

When you initiate these ideas during the New Moon, you will be moving with the current of the Universe, giving you more support to achieve your goals.

3. Manifest Your Vision

Once you have a solid vision to manifest, begin your ceremony with a chant such as OM, a chime, or a short prayer or poem. Then read your journal and notes with purpose.

Practice breathwork or repeat a mantra to help solidify your intention. And when you are finished, thank the Universe for listening.

Once your intentions are set, keep your visions and goals in a safe place to revisit as the Moon waxes. You can also sleep with your New Moon wishes under your pillow, or bury them somewhere safe.

Then, as the Moon waxes, cross off intentions that have been fulfilled and find a moment of gratitude.

The Full Moon: Its Meaning and Unique Energy

The Full Moon occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned and the Moon’s surface is fully illuminated by the reflection of the Sun’s light.

The Full Moon marks the completion of the (waxing) cycle and the growth cycle of our intention. The Full Moon’s energy is at its peak, and is very powerful. We can use this energy to see what is no longer serving our intentions.

It is common to feel overly-emotional and disconnected at the peak of this phase. But we can utilize the Full Moon’s energy with a ritual to see the underlying, and perhaps unconscious reasons for these emotions.

Facing and processing these insights keeps us from going through the waning phases feeling overwhelmed by emotions.

Practice This Full Moon Ritual

Just like the New Moon, the Full Moon is only completely full for an instant, but you have the entire night of the Full Moon to benefit from its powers.

A Full Moon ritual allows you to purge the old stagnant energies and thought patterns and replace any darkness or negativity with the bright, Full Moon energy.

Just like the New Moon ritual, do not focus on the details of the ritual, but on what you need to let go. For your Full Moon ritual, you will only need your journal, matches, candles and a bowl of water to get you started.

Follow These 3 Steps to Prepare for Your Full Moon Ritual:

1. Create a Sacred Space

Similar to your New Moon space, your surroundings should allow you to feel centered and calm for your Full Moon ritual. Again, choose items in your space that make you feel rooted and grounded.

Pranayama or meditation will help clear your mind and set the tone for your ritual.

2. Reflect

Once your mind is clear and focused, observe what you may be ignoring, suppressing or compromising in your life. Notice any negative thoughts and perceptions you may have about a person, situation, or yourself, and then write these observations in a journal or on a piece of paper.

This ritual is about releasing the negative energy in our minds to make space for the positive emotions, so do not hold back when writing your thoughts.

3. Let Go

Now is the time to release what is no longer helping you become the best version of yourself. Read and feel the emotion you wrote in your journal and what you want out of your life, then ceremoniously burn your list of negativity.

It may be more meaningful for you to audibly proclaim what you are letting go of. “I release my feelings of …”

This ritual is about releasing the negative energy in our minds to make space for the positive emotions, so do not hold back…

Once your list has become ashes, place your hands in the bowl of water to signify cleansing, and again thank the Universe for listening. Burning sage or diffusing frankincense during this time can aid in your release of negative or stagnant energy.

4. Re-energize

You’ve let it all go, so now you can reel in the positive Moon energy. Continue to enjoy the positive energy you are harnessing from the Moon by taking a walk outside or opening up a window to bask in the glowing moonlight. Feel yourself recharging, now that the negativity is gone.
