5 Energizing Yoga Practices for a Natural Energy Boost on Those Days You’d Rather Be in Bed

Feeling sluggish? We all have days when we would rather rock a “Namaste in Bed” T-shirt than get up and get our kids ready for school, get to work, and/or whatever other tasks and responsibilities we have ahead of us.

But sometimes, even when we really truly need to rest, we just don’t have the luxury of staying in bed.

Enter energizing yoga! Because we often need a natural energy boost that not even coffee can supply.

Afternoon Slump? Practice These Yoga Poses to Boost Your Energy

Use These 5 Energizing Yoga Practices for a Natural Energy Boost on Those Days You Just Can’t Get Out of Bed:

These five practices are my go-to for a natural energy boost on those impossible mornings.

Try them in this order or as one-off practices anytime you need to get yourself up and out the door without the stimulant crash that comes with many (ahem, caffeinated) alternatives.

1. Seated Breath of Fire

This intense and energizing yoga breathing technique will wake you up in no time. As an added bonus, when practiced regularly, Breath of Fire will tone your abs like no crunches ever could.

How to do it:

  • Sit up tall
  • Take a deep breath in through your nose and a full breath out through your mouth
  • Seal your lips and begin to breathe in and out through your nose – in rhythmic and equal parts
  • Start with 30 seconds and eventually work up to five or 10 minutes

Additional notes:

  • Traditionally, this practice is not only rhythmic and continuous, but also rapid. When starting out, focus on creating a consistent and continuous rhythm. Allow yourself to speed up over time, if you can do so without straining
  • If you are pregnant, you’ll want to skip out on this one until after the baby is born and you are cleared to exercise
  • This shouldn’t feel like you are hyperventilating. So, if it does, give yourself permission to slow down

2. Pelvic Tilts

We hold a lot of tension in the pelvic region, so practice pelvic tilts to release some of that stress and free up your energy.

How to do it:

  • Come onto your hands and knees
  • Inhale through your nose, lift your chest, drop your belly, and tilt your tailbone up
  • Exhale through your nose, press your hands into the earth, draw your navel in toward your spine, and puff your shoulder blades up
  • The focus should be on your pelvic movement, so when you exhale, scoop your pelvis towards the mat. Inhale to release the scoop
  • Try three to five rounds

3. Sun Salutation A

Surya Namaskar A (or Sun Salutation A) is an energizing yoga sequence that will stretch and strengthen your whole body, get your circulation going, and provide you with the opportunity to invert your body and bring blood flow to your brain.

If you don’t have time to do all of the suggested exercises on this list, this is a good choice for a quick pick-me-up!

How to do it:

  • There is a lot to unpack here. We could do a whole article and tutorial on Sun Salutations. Oh wait, we already did! Check it out: Sun Salutation Flow for Beginners (Free Class)
  • Practice three to five rounds of your Sun Salutations

4. Legs Up the Wall

This is a great yoga pose for a natural energy boost on those days when you feel overextended and too tired to do much of anything! Why? You get to put yourself into the posture and then literally do nothing other than breathe and let the posture do the work for you.

How to do it:

  • Sit by a wall with your left hip up against it
  • Gently turn your body to the left and bring your back to the floor (or mat) as you bring your legs up the wall
  • Breathe here for five to 30 minutes

5. Corpse Pose

In today’s world, our minds and bodies are in a constant state of stress – always on-the-go with so much information at our fingertips. So many of us don’t take enough time to rest, leaving ourselves completely depleted.

Corpse Pose (Savasana) is a great way to turn yourself off to recharge your batteries, so to speak. If you wake up feeling tired but don’t have time to truly go back to bed for another couple of hours, try this pose for a natural energy boost.

How to do it:

  • Lay down on your back
  • Let your feet flop open
  • Bring your arms down by your sides and turn the palms of your hands to face up
  • Let your muscles release into the earth below you. There is no need to control your breath. If thoughts come up, see if you can detach from them and let them pass on by
  • Surrender for two to 30 minutes

Additional notes:

  • To reach deep states of relaxation, many yoga teachers suggest practicing this pose for 15 minutes or longer. But even practicing Savasana for two minutes can be beneficial to your body and mind!

Bonus! Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil helps to stimulate deep breathing. Consider adding a few drops to a carrier oil and rubbing it on your wrists when you need a natural pick-me-up. You can put some on before you practice these yoga practices and/or add several drops to an essential oil diffuser. Or, choose a natural body wash or scrub with eucalyptus in it!

These Energizing Yoga Practices Are Your Secret Key to a Natural Energy Boost

We all have times when we feel like we simply can’t do another thing . . . but we have to. So we often resort to coffee or sweets and junk food to help boost our energy.

But, luckily, we can practice energizing yoga to create that same much-needed (but healthier!) natural energy boost!

So the next time you feel like you’ve taken on more than you can handle, practice one or all of these exercises and you just may be pleasantly surprised by the results.
