6 Simple Ways to Increase Your Happiness Now

It’s easy to fall into a rut. No matter where you are in life, things can get complicated, hectic, and sometimes downright unpleasant. Even if you can’t control what’s happening in your life, you can control how you approach it each and every day. Instead of resisting things when they go sour, make an effort to keep your life headed in the direction you want it to go. But most importantly, remember that your life – and your happiness – is a journey, so be kind to yourself and find your happiness in every moment along the way.

You deserve to be happy, so follow these simple steps to ensure that you’re happy in the good times, through the hard times, and most importantly, right now!

Make a list of everything you’ve accomplished.

Sometimes it’s hard to fully acknowledge all of your amazing accomplishments until you take the time to reflect on them. It helps to write them out. Make a list of what you’ve accomplished today, this week, and over the past year. This will show you that even if things are tough, you’re capable of accomplishing your goals! This can also motivate you to get through tough assignments at work, to go to that new yoga class you’ve been meaning to try out, and to live your life to the fullest.

When you look at your accomplishments list, you’ll be reminded of what a strong, capable, and confident person you really are!

Pro tip: start with the small stuff. Sometimes the smallest accomplishments yield the biggest results.

Let the little things go.

In today’s fast-paced world, we’re expected to be available 24/7, and let’s face it: we’re seriously overworked. You certainly don’t need any added stress. If something is bothering you or working you up, do the five-year test: will it matter in five years? If the answer is no, then simply remind yourself that it’s not a big deal.

Let things go as they arise, and especially before you get on your yoga mat, and you’ll realize that as long as you’re healthy and making the effort to surround yourself with positive people, everything else will fall into place.

Spend a little.

Don’t let all of your paycheck go to paying rent and saving up for “the future.” What’s the point in working so hard if you don’t ever get to enjoy yourself? This could lead to you churning out below-average work and rushing to get home instead of doing your best in the moment – and enjoying it too. But if you spend a little of each paycheck, you’ll feel as though you’re reaping the benefits of your hard work. It doesn’t have to be much – maybe just a round of drinks after work with your friends or a new top to wear to yoga. The point is to treat yourself – to make yourself feel good about your hard work – and in so doing, find a bit more happiness.

Treat yourself.

Give when you can.

Nobody ever feels bad after helping those in need. Volunteering or giving back to your community doesn’t have to be boring, or even the normal activities that come to mind when you think of volunteering. Love yoga? Perhaps you can volunteer to teach a yoga class at the local elementary school during their after-hours program. Schools and churches are always looking for new, fun activities to get children active. If you do volunteer yoga, you’re not only giving back, but getting a great workout too!

However you choose to give back, choose something that makes you feel good, because when you give to others, you are also giving to yourself. There’s a win-win you can be happy about!

Let others in.

Sometimes, people want to keep their problems all to themselves. People do this for several reasons: they don’t want others to know about their problems, they want to figure it out on their own, they don’t want others to judge…the list goes on. If people know what’s going on in your life, they’re more likely to cut you some slack when you need it. They can also help. You’d want to help out your friend if she needed it, so why assume that she wouldn’t or couldn’t be there for you? Just having someone to listen to your problems can take a huge weight off your shoulders.

Smile!

You know the saying “fake it til you make it”? It really does work! Not feeling super stoked on life right now? Look at yourself in the mirror and smile. Frustrated during a certain yoga pose? Take a deep breath and just smile – it’s not the end of the world! Studies have shown that smiling actually tricks the brain into feeling happier, so what do you have to lose? Turn that frown upside down! 🙂

Don’t ever settle for being unhappy. You’re the only one that can control your life, and you can make it into anything you want it to be. Each day, do little things to make yourself happy. These things will make a big difference in your life, even if you don’t realize it at first. It’s so easy to get on the road to happiness – you might as well start today!!
