6 Morning Rituals for a Healthier, Happier You

The way you start each morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. If you start the day off negatively or rushed, your day might feel much more stressful than if you have a peaceful morning filled with soothing sounds, a relaxing flow, and a warm beverage.

Here are six morning rituals for a healthier, happier, more peaceful you:

1. Let in the light
Welcome the start to a new day by opening your curtains and letting in the sunshine (even on a cloudy day). Feeling the warmth of sunshine on your skin, and even a light breeze from an open window, can give you a welcome wake up and tell your body that it is now daytime, which can make you feel more awake and less groggy throughout your morning. Also, seeing natural light instead of artificial or fluorescent light can boost your mood and even counteract depression.
2. Crank up the tunes
Instead of lying in bed and checking your email or reading news articles that might frustrate you, try listening to music. You can choose high-energy tunes to pump you up for an important meeting or a peaceful meditation to create tranquility before entering the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Even if you just listen to music while you shower or dress, you would be surprised at how much the right music can set the tone for your entire day.
3. Drink lemon water
Drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning is an excellent way to balance your digestive system and get your body ready for the day. Lemon water offers you a variety of health benefits, including a boost of vitamin C, potassium, and energy. Lemon water also helps with fresh breath, clear skin; it reduces inflammation, helps flush out toxins and even aids in weight loss. After you drink your lemon water, challenge yourself to stay away from caffeinated beverages like coffee. As hard as it may be to restrain from that delicious latte, caffeine is a stimulant that can give you a false sense of energy and an inevitable crash. Wait 15- to 30-minutes after drinking your water to eat, and your body will be ready to absorb nutrients and power you throughout your day.

4. Eat protein
Make sure to eat protein with your breakfast, even if it’s some tofu in your omelet or some protein powder in your smoothie or oatmeal. You do not want to rely on carbohydrates first thing in the morning, or anything too sugary, as it can cause a spike and inevitable crash in your blood sugar. Proteins will keep you fuller and more focused longer, to get you to your mid-morning snack or lunch break.
5. Plan your day
Mapping out your day is an excellent way to keep your goals on track, while alleviating the to-do lists and worries from your mind. Once your day’s tasks are on paper, you will no longer need to worry about them or spend extra energy trying to remember all of the little things that need to be accomplished. Now, you will have an easy-to-reference checklist that can get you through today or tomorrow’s tasks. Plus, it’s super satisfying to check things off your to-do list—an easy way to feel productive throughout your day.
6. Do some yoga
morning-flow-small-video-linkWhat sort of list would we have if we did not encourage you to do yoga in the morning? Even if it is just for five minutes to wake up your muscles and stretch out the fatigue of the night before, you should do yoga first thing in the morning, before going on with your day. This will get your body moving, remind you to focus on your breath, and set the tone for a peaceful, positive, and productive day.
Just like they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, your morning ritual is the most important part of your day. Be kind to your mind and body and set a positive tone that gets you into the right state of mind for the day ahead. Now you are primed and ready to take on any challenges and opportunities that the day may bring you!
