8 Tips on How to Create The Perfect Personal Retreat

The alarm goes off. It’s early. I’m so comfy. Through one puffy eye I scan my planner and ‘to do’ list, then turn over and decide to remain curled up in the safety of my duvet. The song of soft raindrops on the roof is like a lullaby and they soothe me back to sleep.

It’s needed. Yesterday was a tough and busy day. I have had a lot on my plate lately and that has overwhelmed me.

Lets face it. We all need the occasional ‘duvet’ or ‘mental health’ day. Keeping the blinds closed and staying where it’s cozy gives us the opportunity to hit the pause button, unplug and process what’s happening in our lives.

The trouble is we usually wait until we’re at crisis point before we take action.

Instead of pressing on when we’re under pressure, what if we could create our own home spa and retreat into our inner sanctuary?

From my experience taking a little time out from the world when we first feel we need it is better than waiting until we’re completely burnt out and have to play catch up.

Here are some tips on how to create the perfect personal retreat so you can recharge your batteries.

Clear your schedule
Don’t wait until you have to call in sick. Schedule some ‘me time’ on the weekend or book a day off that is dedicated for only you.

Invest time in the most important relationship of all
The relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship of all! It pays to invest extra time and effort into creating a healthy and intimate relationship with yourself. For today, make it all about you. That may feel indulgent or selfish at first, but remember that if you’re your best version of you, it impacts the health and wellbeing of those around you too.

Cultivate contentment
Aim to feel as comfortable and contented as you can on your chill day. Don’t expect too much and allow yourself to be ok with not doing very much. Try not to think of things you could or should be doing and instead tune into your own needs.

Prepare
In addition to clearing your agenda, clean and clear your space too. Make it feel fresh with an uplifting scent and some flowers. Go grocery shopping the day before so you’re fully prepared and don’t have to leave the house…unless you want to.

Pamper
Purchase some nice products that will bring you pleasure. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive. Some new bath oil or a nail polish is perfect.

Eat treats
Fill your fridge with healthy snacks and take your time preparing soul-satisfying food.
You can make room for your favorite treats too though—it’s good to indulge yourself a little.

Bend and breathe
Don’t spend the whole day slumped on the sofa. Unroll your yoga mat and do some light Yin or restorative yoga that will help you relax and rejuvenate.

Use your time differently
If you’re used to unwinding with movies or social media, try immersing yourself in books and magazines instead. You might like to paint, draw, write or sew. Being creative and working with your hands can be very calming.

And remember: don’t feel guilty! It is hard sometimes to slow down and make yourself your own priority, but it is worth doing from time to time for increased health, wellbeing and vitality. Carve out some much-needed ‘you time,’ make a date with yourself at your ‘home spa,’ and enjoy!! You deserve it.
