Book Review: “A Return to Love” by Marianne Williamson

You may be thinking, “A return to love? But I never left!” or “What does that mean, exactly?”

If you’ve ever spoken negatively to or about yourself, doubted your power, or struggled to see your own light, then you’ve departed from love.

Love is not a gift we give away. Love is a gift we share; ourselves included.

To truly know and experience love, we must first understand its power. And rather than try to tame it or control it, we must surrender to it.

A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson is a guide back to our original selves.

Why These Words?

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…”

Do these words have any impact on you? If so, you should read A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson.

We’ve heard the quote recited in many popular movies and speeches, but many of us do not know it’s origin or that it continues or why these words were originally shared.

9 Personal Development Books by Black Authors That Will Seriously Inspire You

The quote was written to remind us of who we truly are and to show us what we have forgotten. It specifies how lost we all are in this world and encourages us to find the courage to come home.

To find the courage to return to love. To return to kindness. To return to honor.

To return to our truest selves.

Return to Love

“We’re hallucinating. And that’s what this world is: a mass hallucination, where fear seems more real than love. Fear is an illusion. Our craziness, paranoia, anxiety and trauma are literally all imagined.

That is not to say they don’t exist for us as human beings. They do. But our fear is not our ultimate reality, and it does not replace the truth of who we really are. Our love, which is our real self, doesn’t die, but merely goes underground.”

A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson, page 23.

Now do you understand why we must return to love? Because it’s time to read the full quote!

Once you read it, let it sink in. Read it as many times as you need to until you believe it.

Here we go…Are you ready to return to love?

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.

There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Words Have Impact

Take a deep breath. These words have power.

Within the book, Williamson uses biblical examples and religious language as a reference for the principles outlined in the text.

However, the concepts can be perceived by all who are open even if the biblical references and religious language do not align with you.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…”

She speaks plainly and rather directly in the book regarding her own personal reflection on how she navigated the principles while also calling the reader out to reveal unsupportive thought patterns.

The chapters are broken into two parts, Principles and Practice.

Part I. Principles is like a road map to navigate new routes to reach our ultimate destination, inner peace and love.

It introduces enlightened thinking and an in depth reflection of how we personally interpret and navigate the world.

Part II. Practice isolates areas to apply these principles and explains how to operate at a higher level of emotional intelligence in chapters: Relationship, Work, Body and Heaven.

The Ego

“Without the ego, all would be love.”- A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson, p. 61

The book reveals the ego is designed to keep us operating subconsciously in a state of fear. It challenges the reader to consider deeply why we choose what we choose.

Are our deepest desires fueled by purpose and servitude or truly just masking a deep seeded fear?

Journaling any thoughts and memories through the chapters, especially in Part II. Practice, can assist in processing the areas in which the ego is the driving force versus your own compassion and purpose.

A great deal of inner child healing occurs through the processing of memories of that past.

Reading A Return To Love fosters a stronger connection to your own self-love and invites forgiveness of past hurts and traumas.

In reality, the past predicts the future and so on. Our past unsolved traumas and/or fears dictate and power our present and future experiences.

These learned experiences become our deepest fears and disguise themselves as the ego.

A Return to Love initiates a trip down memory lane to compare how past and present responses to unhealed triggers and perceived situations and circumstances can be handled with more grace as the ego disintegrates.

Reading A Return To Love fosters a stronger connection to your own self-love and invites forgiveness of past hurts and traumas.

If you are searching for peace within your healing journey, I would recommend grabbing a copy of A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson.

It’s Your Time to Return to Love

At the least, bookmark this page, and read the main quote, “Our deepest fear…” to yourself daily or when you begin to let your fear and doubt convince you that you are not enough.

Share it with those around you who can also benefit from knowing how badass they are and that is ok to not only know that, but to shout it to the roof tops.

It is our duty to be authentically ourselves. There is no other person better suited for the job than you. Someone is waiting on you to share your gifts with the world so they too can feel empowered to share theirs.

After all, we are not here for ourselves. It is your time to shine and return to love.
