What is “Yoga Brain”? The Science Behind Post-Yoga Bliss

It’s no lie that yoga induces a state of supreme yoga bliss! After a high-vibe or soothing yoga class, it is easy to float away on cloud 9 and completely forget all earthly possessions, obligations, and attachments.

But what is it about doing yoga that takes us to another dimension? Do we really “go somewhere” or is it simply that we are arriving at where we should always be?

Post-yoga bliss is living 100% in the present – without judgement, stress, or ego-driven thoughts.

Living a yogic lifestyle is a surefire way to connect with your authenticity, disconnect from all that doesn’t serve your higher self, and reestablish your connection to both the universe and your own divinity.

The science of meditation has been studied in depth, and yoga is simply a moving meditation. It is through this ancient and intentional practice that we become aware of what matters most and what doesn’t matter at all. This is the post-yoga bliss that has kept yogis around the world going back for more throughout the ages.

What is Post-Yoga Bliss?

Post-yoga bliss is the equivalent to a runner’s high for yogis. It is a state you experience from intentional movement and conscious breathing that quite literally rewires your brain. Your brain releases serotonin, a feel-good brain chemical, that helps to alleviate stress and anxiety as the physical movement releases tension in the body.

Post-yoga bliss – often referred to as “yoga brain” – is walking out of the yoga studio with hearts in your eyes and forgetting your shoes. It is walking right past someone you know and not even noticing them. It is the essence of who we really are at the core, with all societal expectations and programming removed.

The Science Behind Post-Yoga Bliss

Neurologically speaking, post-yoga bliss is the activation of certain parts of the brain and a deactivation of others. According to scientific research, yoga creates more folds in the outer layer of the brain, called gyrification, which helps us process information better and decreases susceptibility to stress and anxiety.

The mind becomes deeply intertwined with the body and the two become one – opening up the flow of communication.

The amygdala – the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions – is also affected during yoga, which in turn helps us better manage the waves of emotions that we experience as humans. This is useful in times of high stress, emotionally-charged interactions, and the fight or flight response.

Think about yoga as a reboot for your mind. It is erasing all the clutter that you don’t need and leaving you with a clean, high-performing slate.

What Are the Benefits of Post-Yoga Bliss?

  • Not giving a f*ck
  • Euphoria, gratitude, and peace
  • Release of built-up stress in the mental and physical body
  • Reconnection to heart, soul, and spirit
  • Realization of your power to control the mind
  • Improvement in relationships with yourself and others
  • Breath control and connection to the divine within
  • Hit the ‘reset button’ for your mind

How Does Yoga Affect the Mind and Body?

Similar to the effects of meditation, yoga is a neurological vacation – but it also awakens parts of the brain that are typically inactive during normal day-to-day activity. Yoga creates an awareness of the self that would otherwise be overlooked by the “monkey brain.” The mind becomes deeply intertwined with the body and the two become one – opening up the flow of communication.

The body is always communicating with the mind and sending messages of its current state. However, with our busy lives, stress, obligations, and an oversaturation of ego, we can become disconnected from this divine conversation. When this happens, it is easy for dis-ease to manifest and our state of homeostasis becomes compromised.

Get Your Bliss On

Through yoga and meditation, we can access, and live in, the state of post-yoga bliss and remind ourselves that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. So next time you leave yoga and forget your shoes and where you are, revel in this space and allow it to wash over you, knowing that you did something beneficial for your mind, body, and soul.
