Are you a healthy eater? If so, you probably keep hummus stocked in your fridge. It’s a healthy staple because of the versatility and array of flavors. Make some for guests as a dip, spread it on sandwiches in place of mayo, or even add a scoop to a salad – the possibilities are endless.
 
However, store-bought hummus has nothing on the homemade variety. Using fresh herbs and spices, you’ll achieve the best flavor and you’ll know exactly what ingredients are included.

Here are 5 homemade hummus recipes that will satisfy any hummus fanatic:

 

1. The Classic

This is the tried-and-true lemon and garlic base. If you want to kick up the flavor a bit, add an additional clove of garlic.

In a food processor, combine the following:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2-3 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (option: add more to taste)

*This classic base will be the primary ingredients in the recipes below. Start with the base, and add the specific flavors for your own customized hummus!
 
 

2. Sundried Tomato Basil

The aromatic basil works well with sundried tomato. This hummus is delicious on a sandwich or a lettuce wrap.

Hummus Base:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2-3 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (option: add more to taste)

 
Additional Ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup chopped sundried tomatoes
  • ½ cup fresh basil

Add all ingredients to a food processor and combine for 30 seconds. Scrape sides, and process again for 30 seconds. Garnish hummus with additional chopped sundried tomatoes, red pepper flakes, and a fresh basil leaf.
 
 

3. Cilantro Lime Jalapeno

Zesty and spicy, this hummus can be an unexpected addition to taco night.

Hummus Base:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • Juice of 1 *lime (about 2-3 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (option: add more to taste)

*Note: swap lemon juice for fresh lime in this recipe
 
Additional Ingredients:

  • ½ cup packed fresh cilantro
  • ½ – 1 whole diced jalapeno, depending on your desired level of spice
  • Lime wedges

Add all ingredients to a food processor and combine for 30 seconds. Scrape sides, and process again for 30 seconds. Garnish hummus with additional diced jalapeno, cilantro, and lime wedges.
 

 

4. Basil Pesto Pine Nut

This pesto hummus uses fresh basil and is great for the summer months!

Hummus base:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2-3 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (option: add more to taste)

 
Additional Ingredients:

  • ½ cup packed fresh basil
  • ¼ cup of pine nuts

Add all ingredients to a food processor and combine for 30 seconds. Scrape sides, and process again for 30 seconds. Garnish hummus with additional pine nuts, a drizzle of olive oil, and a fresh basil leaf.
 
 

5. Roasted Red Pepper with Black Olive

A classic hummus combo with added black olive tapenade.

Hummus Base:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2-3 tbsp)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (option: add more to taste)

 
Additional Ingredients:

  • ½ cup roasted red pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes

Add all ingredients to a food processor and combine for 30 seconds. Scrape sides, and process again for 30 seconds. Garnish hummus with fresh parsley, and diced black olives.
 
 
Final tip for DIY hummus? Remove the skin from the chickpeas. It takes a few extra minutes to prepare, but by doing so, the outcome is a much more creamy texture! These 5 hummus recipes are sure to appeal to any palate and accompany any style dish. Skip the store-bought and enjoy!
