4 Tips to Stay Healthy and Avoid the Holiday Slump

Between the unhealthy foods lining the shelves at your local supermarket, family get-togethers, stress, and everything else that goes along with the holiday season, the last quarter of the year can be a true test to your willpower and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. It is always important to be mindful about how you are treating yourself, but it is this time of year that the focus becomes even more important.
Here are four tips to make sure that you don’t put yourself on the back burner this holiday season:

Be Mindful

You’re trying to balance your everyday life during this time of year, but there are so many extra to-do’s and worries being thrown in the mix. Between work parties, evening programs, family events . . . how are you supposed to find time to keep up with your healthy eating?

To make it easier, keep your kitchen stocked with healthy foods that are easy to grab and go. Stock up on those fruits and veggies, as well as proteins and healthy fats, such as almonds. You need to give your body the proper fuel so that you can make it through these hectic months. Eat healthy when you can, because it might not always be possible. You don’t always have a say in what food gets served at the various events that you will attend, so do your best to pick what may be the “best of the worst,” and enjoy a cocktail or two if you’d like. These cheats can be budgeted for – you just need to keep the balance and avoid cheats every day and at every meal.

Get Moving!

With the influx of all the not-so-healthy holiday food you may be eating this time of year, it’s now more important than ever to find time for your daily workout. This might be hard to do with your busy schedule, but it can be as easy as waking up 30 minutes earlier, or going for a walk around your neighborhood to look at holiday decorations.

There are many tweaks that you can make to your everyday life to fit in some physical activity, even when you are pressed for time. Maybe you’re feeling stressed out? Go for a run! You can blow off some steam and you’ll feel great after. No matter what you do, do not neglect your physical fitness, or come January 1, you may have some regrets that need resolution.


Find Your “Om”

The holidays can be a stressful time. Whether it’s looking for a last minute gift or trying to juggle family and work, make sure you find quiet time for yourself to relax and debug. Take an hour out of your busy week to attend your favorite yoga class. If the timing of the class doesn’t work with your schedule, find your zen by taking an online class whenever it’s convenient to you. Even if you have just five minutes, meditate or pencil in some time for wild idling to give your mind a well-deserved rest. You need a little “me time,” even if it happens to be during the middle of the night. This “me time” is good for you to keep you grounded and focused, but it’s also good for your loved ones, so they can experience the best you that there is!

Don’t Forget About YOU

The holidays are all about giving. You’re giving gifts and giving your time, but don’t forget to also take a little for yourself. Know when to say no when you simply have too much going on or when you feel overextended and under-rested. It’s easy to feel obligated to friends and family this time of year, but you also need to take care of yourself and keep your priorities in order. Schedule yourself in for a mani-pedi or take yourself out to dinner and a movie. You are just as important as anyone else, so don’t stretch yourself too thin.
You’ve worked hard all year to eat healthy, exercise and stay fit, so don’t let the last few months derail all of that work! Keep your goals and priorities in mind, and schedule everything else around that. You can’t truly enjoy the holidays unless you are feeling your best. Eat healthy, workout, find time to relax and treat yourself right. Everything else will fall into place. Happy Holidays!
