When you walk through the produce aisle of your local market, you cannot help but grab an avocado . . . or 10 . . . and begin thinking about all the ways you will prepare it. Then, once you are home and ready to dig in. . . it hits you. The damn thing is not ripe!
Most of us don’t have the time, patience or willpower to wait days and days for an avocado to ripen.
Don’t fret! Just because your avocado isn’t ripe this very moment does not mean that you have to play the waiting game. You can help ripen it a little faster by placing it in a paper bag with a fruit that emits ethylene gas, which promotes ripening, such as a pear, apple or banana.
But when time is of the essence and this natural ripening process is still too long for you, then you can bake the avocado and cause it to ripen in 10 minutes flat!
In the words of Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, “I want it now!”
Here is the easy 3-step process to ripen your avocados in just 10 minutes:
- Wrap your avocado in tin foil
- Place it on a baking sheet
- Bake it for 10 minutes in an oven heated to 200 degrees
Then, just snatch it out of the oven, slice it up, and enjoy your newly-ripened avocado in all of it’s glory. The avocado will be slightly softer than if it ripened naturally, but it won’t be warm, mushy or unpleasant at all.
