If you’re one of the nearly 18 million people to have viewed “Jessica’s Daily Affirmations” on Youtube, then you have witnessed the power that affirmations can have. Affirmations have the power to make a little girl jump around her bathroom vanity, filled with the electric energy of positivity. Affirmations have the power to inspire 15 million views on Youtube!
But more importantly than this single video, affirmations have the power to change your life right now. How? First, watch this adorable video. Then, let’s break down the power behind affirmations.

First off, what are affirmations? Affirmations can be defined as “the action or process of affirming something; a statement declared to be true.” Another definition is “emotional support or encouragement.”
Both definitions speak to the power behind your words: stating your intention clearly as if it has already come into being. For example, stating something as simple as, “I am capable and confident and worthy of being loved.” Or you can get really specific: “I love every part of myself, from my mismatched socks to my unruly hair!”
Why should we do this? Because our thoughts very literally create our reality.

“Watch your thoughts; they become your words. Watch your words; they become your actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Your habits become your character, and your character becomes your destiny.” -Lao Tzu

Want to control your destiny? It’s simple. Control your thoughts. Realize that you have a choice in what you focus your attention on. Realize that we are all faced with challenges and difficulties in life.
The point isn’t to focus on what has or has not happened to you, but instead to focus on what you want to happen, and more importantly, to focus on how you want to feel about it. There are two ways of viewing the world: through the lens of fear , negativity and lack, or through the lens of love, positivity and abundance.

Jessica chooses the latter. Jessica has decided to take her reality and her destiny into her own hands, focusing on all the good and all the love that is already in her life. Instead of focusing on the what-if’s or the should have’s or the “if only I had _____  my life would be better…”, try focusing on what you already have. If that’s challenging for you, start small. Look around you! You are alive! It’s a beautiful day outside, regardless of the weather, because it is a brand new day and a brand new opportunity for experiencing and living life.
Tell yourself, “I am worthy of having a great day!” “I am worthy of getting that dream job” “I am capable of finding true love.” All of these things become true just as soon as you say them, and mean them, and believe in them.

Today, your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make one small affirmation to yourself. Decide what you want to focus on (the only requirement is that it’s something positive for yourself), and create a simple affirmation for it. State it clearly to yourself in the mirror (this makes you face yourself and then view yourself through the lens of self-love and acceptance). And as you go throughout your day, hold this affirmation close to you. Write it on a sticky note and tape it to your desk or rearview mirror — somewhere you can’t lose sight out of it! Repeat it often and with sincerity.
Now notice how you feel — notice how your thoughts shifted to a state of positivity, abundance, and a sense of being in control. That, dear friends, is the power of your affirmation. As the inspiring spiritual author Mike Dooley says, “Thoughts become things. Choose the good ones!”
