A Yogic View of This Year’s Election

As yogis and spiritual beings, this is no time to sit on the side lines. Now more than ever, we need to tap into our inner self and beliefs to decide what we think is best for our country.

Election year has been known to bring out the worst in people and this year is particularly eye opening – even jaw dropping. This year’s presidential candidates could not be any more different – not only separated by party, sex and appearance, but also by every stance and issue they face.

Clinton and Trump stand for something more than just a person we should vote for . . . they are the face of our inner issues. These are the people America has chosen based on our own fears, insecurities and resentments.

Let’s look at what our presidential candidates represent:

Donald Trump Represents America’s Shadow

Trump is an an anomaly. Highly ranked political strategists didn’t think he would even make it to the primaries, let alone become the Republican presidential nominee.

He defies conventional rules of politics saying things that are so outlandish and shocking that he gets media coverage. Does he actually believe these statements and accusations? Who knows! Yet the fact remains that he continues to move forward in his campaign.

Donald Trump represents America’s shadow.

He is an aspect of the human psyche and says things that many people think, but are too scared to say. Every human is flawed, and we all think things that make us “bad.” The shadow is our dark impulses: the rage, resentment, aggression, hatred etc.

According to Deepak Chopra, “When the shadow breaks out, what’s wrong is right. Being transgressive feels like a relief because suddenly the collective psyche can gambol in forbidden fields.” Chopra goes on to say that Trump’s over-the-top behavior is a reflection of society’s impulse to break the rules . . .

Political strategist Mark McKinnon stated, “Trump knows what the people want better than any politician out there.” That is because he idealizes his demons – he makes them look like it’s fun and acceptable to think this way. Trump shows people that he can say the things that they keep trapped inside, and the people who share his beliefs feel a sigh of relief that they’re not alone.

Hillary Clinton Represents the Rise in Femininity

Clinton represents the beginning stages of the Aquarius age this planet entered in 2012. Gender roles have completely changed since the 20th century. Men are now more attuned with their feelings, their compassion and even opting out of the breadwinning role to become homemakers.

We are emerging from the age of power and control (known as the Pisces age) into the Aquarius age of sensitivity, awareness, intuition and compassion.

Clinton represents the beginning stages of the Aquarius age this planet entered in 2012.

The Piscean age is known as a very ugly age, especially for females. According to Yogi Bhajan, “The male/female relationship didn’t have any strength. It didn’t have any character. It didn’t have any taste. So females in the past century gave birth to some of the most fearful, insecure, impotent, or oversexed men, and sexual disorder was worse than ever before in the past 3,000 years.”

There has been a fight for power, control, land, oil, etc. for the last 3,000 years and people are now aware of this constant battle. They recognize that “man’s” way may not be the best way and Clinton being a female in power gives people hope. They want to see a face that matches what they feel and are hopeful in the rise of the feminine divine.

“Regardless of your politics, it’s a seminal moment for women. What this says is, there is no ceiling, that ceiling just went boom! It says anything is possible when you can be leader of the free world.” – Oprah Winfrey

The Takeaway

It’s time we reduce the gaps between our light and our shadows. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness have made HUGE leaps into the mainstream. The sun is rising!

As Yogananda said, “Where there is light, darkness cannot exist.”

Instead of viewing male and female, black and white, Republican and Democrat – look further, look deeper into what the world is like around you.

Meditate on this and notice the illusions you may have created or subscribed to, whether from a place of fear, insecurity, ego . . . then allow your true self-beliefs to surface. Turn on your light.

Once we own our flaws and darkness, we can return to the light and to the love from which we were created.

Has this election brought up some deep issues you did not want to face? Have you been able to take a step back from the politics and view the big picture? What can you do as an individual to fill our society with light?
