6 Life-Changing Documentaries On Netflix Every Yogi Needs to See!

Most of us don’t get excited about curling up in front of the TV to watch a great documentary. Chances are you might associate most documentaries with the black and white World War II documentary you had to sit through in high school. Boring! What we may not realize, however, is that there are plenty of great documentaries at our fingertips that aren’t just educational but also thought-provoking and entertaining.

Here are 6 documentaries that will make you think and maybe even ignite a desire for change in your life and your world:

Awake: The Life of Yogananda (2014)

Paramahansa Yogananda was the first man to bring the Indian ideas of meditation and yoga to the western world. His story is one of miraculous spiritual realizations and a courageous and successful attempt to change the way people in the western world think about spirituality. It is also a good reminder that yoga is not just about getting a killer workout.

For anyone who wants to learn about the spiritual side of their yoga practice, this documentary is a must. Not a Netflix subscriber? Stream it live on Amazon.

Love it and want to take the next step? Read the book by Paramahansa Yogananda, Autobiography of a Yogi. It is named one of the 100 best spiritual books of the 20th century.

Farmageddon: The Unseen War on American Family Farms (2011)

This intriguing documentary is a must-see for everyone. It documents how foods we eat from small farms are far less processed and much healthier than the foods endorsed and protected by big government. It has everything from shocking footage and stories of family farms being shut down, animals unnecessarily slaughtered, to a call for action to make better, more local, organic and humane food choices.

Don’t have Netflix? Pick up a copy here.

Want to go a step further? Visit the Farmageddon website, a great resource for information on how to suggest to your local school districts that they buy from local farms, and links to advocate organizations.

Fed Up (2014)

This is an awesome and refreshingly honest look at the food we eat and the corresponding obesity problem in U.S. This movie takes a look into the lives of American families and how they do not understand the importance of or even how to eat healthy. It points out the dangers in the school lunch system and the lack of access to healthy food in today’s world. When you learn the truth about the current state of the food industry, you will undoubtedly be inspired to make more healthy choices.

Not on Netflix? Watch it anytime on Amazon.

The True Cost (2015)

This is a revealing, and at times heart-wrenching, documentary that exposes the real lives of the people who are employed in clothing sweatshops. Top designers and sweatshop workers are interviewed, and through these stories, we are forced to realize that we are consuming more than ever in terms of clothing. This documentary examines the human rights violations occurring in sweatshops, as well as the environmental effects of the fashion industry.

Not a Netflix subscriber? Watch it anytime you’d like on Amazon.

Now that you’re educated, you can start examining the labels on your clothes and make an effort to buy only things you need.

I Am (2010)

This deeply impactful documentary by Tom Shadyac, director of comedies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Bruce Almighty, discusses his life-changing mountain biking accident that caused him to rethink his place in the world. The accident prompted him to ask questions like, “what is wrong with the world today?” and “what can we do about it?” The documentary features thoughts from philosophers, prominent scholars and scientists, and leaves you feeling that even as one individual, you have the power to create change.

If you aren’t a Netflix subscriber, you can watch it here.

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)

(This recommendation was added by the YouAligned editorial team)
An eye opening documentary about the environmental impacts of animal agriculture and the lengths at which our government is going to to keep it under wraps.

If you do not have Netflix, this documentary is available in full length on YouTube.

What do you do now? Well, that is up to you.

Realizing we can make a big impact by making a small change, such as buying organic or only buying just the clothes we need, is powerful. The way we choose to learn from and about the world we live in is a different journey for each individual. But as the director of I Am states, “I hope people start to look at their lives as the most powerful, creative act they will ever offer this world.”
