For thousands of years, cultures around the world have been using the powerful properties of plants. These cultures have known the immense wellness benefits of plants, and in modern times, essential oils have brought to light what these cultures have known throughout the ages.

From ancient scrolls that recorded uses of oils for helping all sorts of ailments, to modern time uses for cleaning, aromatherapy, and beyond, essential oils have been a household staple for much longer than you may have thought!

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are derived from a broad range of plants. They are made by distilling or extracting different parts of these plants – from the flowers, leaves, and bark, to their roots, resin and peels. This amazing process creates highly concentrated oils with powerful properties that offer a broad range of uses.

How can I use essential oils?

To put it simply, you can use essential oils topically or aromatically, and some can be ingested. Before you jump into using essential oils, it’s important to know that not all oils are created equal, which means you can only ingest the highest quality oils that are marked safe for internal use.

A bit more on aromatherapy + applying topically

Essential oils use the aromas of plant extracts to promote health and wellbeing. This wellbeing is physical but also mental and emotional, as most easily demonstrated with aromatherapy. Essential oil diffusers are an excellent way to receive the benefits of aromatherapy, such as elevated mood, and deep conscious breathing.

When you apply an essential oil topically, use a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, etc. to start. Diluting the essential oil with 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil is a good way to safely gauge how your skin and body react to the more highly concentrated plant extracts.

The benefit of topical application is that the oil can quickly absorb, it promotes wellness for the area of application, and you can massage directly onto joints, muscles, etc.
Now that you’ve gained a basic understanding of essential oils, let’s take a closer look at some of the more common essential oils to explore all the fun ways you can incorporate them into your healthy lifestyle.

For this beginner’s guide, we are featuring oils from Miracle Essential Oils, a company that we trust and respect for their high-quality line of essential oils and essential oil blends.

*The oils and their uses listed below are based on Miracle Essential Oils specifically – remember that not all essential oil brands are safe for internal use.
