Pack These 10 Essential Oils for Your Next Family Vacation

As someone who has a lot of knowledge and experience with essential oils, I’ve come to find a wide variety of ways to incorporate them in my daily life. Essential oils can be diffused, ingested (only if pure enough quality, read labels carefully), and applied topically. They offer uses from disinfecting your home, to cleansing and detoxing the body, to boosting immunity, to supporting healthy breathing, and to soothing sore muscles. The list goes on and on.

As a mother of three, my favorite aspect of essential oils is that they are a natural, holistic, and safe alternative to traditional store-bought products that are full of toxic and dangerous chemicals and other harmful ingredients. Essential oils are the key ingredient in many easy DIY recipes that you can use whether you’re on the go, cleaning your home, or taking your next vacation.

My family and I recently went on a long road trip through the Southwest, here are the 10 essential oils I brought along for the ride:

All oils below are Doterra brand. You can shop them here.

1. Serenity essential oil blend – for a better sleep

Serenity (doesn’t it sound sublime?), an essential oil blend that combines the soothing scents of Lavender, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, and Ylang Ylang with the warming aromas of Hawaiian Sandalwood and Vanilla Bean, is the perfect blend to diffuse at bedtime, or apply to the bottoms of your feet, for a restful night’s sleep and some seriously sweet dreams after an exciting day filled with new adventures. Hello, travel diffuser!

2. DigestZen essential oil blend – for help with digestion

Let’s face it, we ALWAYS end up eating way too much of the WRONG food on vacation. Luckily for us, DigestZen essential oil is a proprietary Dottera blend of essential oils that have been recognized for their digestive health benefits including Ginger, Peppermint, Tarragon, Fennel, Caraway, Coriander and Anise.

When used internally, DigestZen may help reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion with is common when traveling and eating foods your body is not used to.

3. PB Assist Probiotic – maintaining a healthy gut

PB Assist+ Probiotic Defense Formula is a unique double-layer vegetable capsule of pre-biotic fiber and six strains of probiotic microorganisms which encourages friendly bacterial growth and offers a safe and effective way to deliver digestive and immune system support. Major bonus, there is NO dairy in this formula so it does not need refrigeration like most other probiotics.

4. On Guard essential oil blend and On Guard Beadlets – keeping a healthy immune system

On Guard essential oil provides a natural and effective alternative for immune support by protecting against environmental and seasonal threats with a blend of wild orange, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary, each known for their positive effects on the immune system. It can also be used on surfaces throughout your hotel room, bathroom, equipment, luggage wheels, etc.) as a non-toxic cleaner.

If you are looking for quick and easy, with no application necessary, you can just pop an On Guard Beadlet in your mouth for instant immune support and protection. It contains 3/4 of a drop of On Guard essential oil in a tiny pellet that is easy to swallow or melts in your mouth. This is a perfect solution to boost your immune system while traveling by airplane or boat or with a tour group when you are exposed to oodles of germs.

5. DIY On Guard Hand Sanatizer – for clean hands

DIY On Guard hand sanitizer recipe: (1) In a small bowl, combine 5 tablespoons aloe vera gel and ¼ teaspoon vitamin E oil (2) Add 8-10 drops of On Guard Protective Blend essential oil to aloe vera mixture (3) Add water by tablespoon to desired consistency (we like ours thicker so it doesn’t drip) and mix well to combine (4) Pour into a 2-4 oz. glass spray bottle.

6. Peppermint and Peppermint Beadlets – the everything oil

Frequently used in toothpaste and chewing gum for oral hygiene, Peppermint essential oil also helps alleviate occasional stomach upset, promotes healthy respiratory function and repels bugs naturally. But MOST IMPORTANTLY especially when traveling during the summer or in warmer climates, quickly cools the body by applying to the back of the neck or bottoms of the feet. YOU’RE WELCOME!

And since you are likely meeting lots of new people on your travels, Peppermint Beadlets (3/4 of a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil, known in some circles as a party in your mouth) give you fresh breath when you need it, are easy and handy to carry in a purse or pocket, and are fabulous in a pinch in case you forget to brush your teeth.

7. Whisper essential oil blend – perfume

Whisper, an essential oil blend for women, combines with each individual’s body chemistry to create a uniquely personal fragrance, so besides not smelling like anyone else on the planet, this “perfume” doesn’t contain alcohol or synthetic “fragrance” that causes headaches for many women.

Jasmine and Ylang Ylang’s euphoric aromas combine with the warm and spicy scents of Patchouli, Vanilla, Cinnamon, and Cocoa and also features Bergamot, Labdanum, Vetiver, Hawaiian Sandalwood, and Rose essential oils. Yummy, and did I mention great for hormonal support too?

8. Breathe essential oil blend and Breathe Vapor Stick – keeping allergies at bay

Breathe essential oil blend is incredibly handy to have on the go, wherever you may be, even in different climates and at different altitudes (our trip took us from sea level up to over 7,000 feet and back down again) to allow easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal allergy threats.

It is a remarkable blend of essential oils including Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Ravensara, and Cardamom that can be applied topically to the chest, back, or bottom of feet, or diffused to cleanse the air.

9. Multivitamin – overall health

Vitamins for adults and kids provide the base for our bodies to build on and sometimes when we are on vacation we lose track of this when really it is such a beneficial part of your daily routine that being on vacation should not interrupt. Whole food nutrition and fish oil supplements keeps your body working like when you are at home, keeps up your physical and mental stamina, and makes sure you are still getting the nutrients and omegas your body needs even though you likely aren’t cooking or preparing your own food.

10. Correct-X Ointment – keeping healthy skin and moisturized

Correct-X ointment is a petroleum-free, preservative-free ointment that absorbs quickly and is gentle and non-irritating, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Frankincense, Helichrysum, Melaleuca, Cedarwood, and Lavender essential oils form the base of this multi-purpose, all-natural ointment that provides a moisture barrier to soothe and hydrate the skin and keep skin irritations clean.

You can’t even imagine how many scratches and cuts kids manage to get on vacation (hint: LOTS!!!), and in a pinch you can use it on your chapped lips.

I hope this helps you pack for your next adventure!

***Note: Keep in mind that most essential oil bottles can be taken in your carry-on luggage and do NOT need to be in checked baggage. But make sure to tighten the caps of your bottles before boarding your plane, as the caps have been known to loosen in high altitude and you don’t want to waste any of your precious essential oils! And always make sure you store your essential oils in a case or storage box so they won’t be directly exposed to too much sunlight or heat. ***
