18 Holistic Health + Beauty Hacks (You’ll Never Guess What Cures Hangovers)

Holistic medicine is a way of healing our mind, body, emotions and spirit. The most fascinating part about practicing holistic medicine is the belief that we all have an incredible, intrinsic power to heal ourselves.

Holistic medicine focuses on the body as a whole, rather than comprised of individual parts like in western medicine. It involves finding any imbalances physically, emotionally, or energetically and taking the necessary actions to reinstate homeostasis.

Balancing our minds and bodies is essential to our overall health because if one part is imbalanced, another part may become so as well. For example, if you have recurring headaches, instead of taking harmful medicine to mask the pain, instead dig deeper into why you may be having these headaches.

But if you’re just dipping your toes into this “holistic health pool” and you’re not quite on board with the emotional power of healing, you can always start small by taking a more natural approach to everyday physical healing.

Here are 18 holistic health and beauty hacks for your overall wellness:

1. Teeth Whitening Hack:

Oil Pulling
You may have heard of oil pulling as a way to combat bacteria in your mouth. While that is one amazing benefit and a great way to keep your mouth and body free of harmful bacteria, another awesome benefit of oil pulling is whiter teeth. Not only will this process whiten teeth but it will also lead to better oral health, which has a cascade effect on the body.

Directions:

  • For a whiter and brighter smile, swish 1 tbsp. of organic coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes (this is not a typo, so grab a good book)
  • Spit the oil into the trash when you’re done to save your plumbing, and be very careful not to swallow any oil as it’s filled with bacteria
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water then brush as you normally would
  • Oil pulling is best done in the morning before your first meal
  • We recommend using this ayurvedic oral pulling rinse

2. Toothache Hack:

Ginger Root
Ginger has many powerful medicinal properties to help soothe and treat a variety of ailments within the body. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties found in ginger root can help sooth redness, swelling, and even minor infections that stem from toothaches.

Directions:

  • Clean and dry the ginger root
  • Cut a thick piece in half and peel or cut off the skin
  • Bite down gently into the ginger root (close to the aching tooth) to extract the juice, then swish
  • Chew on the ginger root for 5 minutes once it begins to soften
  • Repeat several times daily, or as needed until the pain subsides

3. Hair Growth Hack:

Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is a wonderful essential oil with many healing properties. Its invigorating scent can awaken us and stimulate the body’s natural healing power. Peppermint essential oil also has antimicrobial properties and increases blood circulation – making it perfect to use on your scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Directions:

  • For faster hair growth, apply oil to the fingertips then massage onto the entire scalp. The cooling, tingly sensation of the peppermint increases blood flow to the scalp, stimulating hair growth.

4. Acne Hack:

Liquid Chlorophyll
Liquid chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants to help them absorb sunlight. Liquid chlorophyll promotes oxygen in the skin and the reproduction of red blood cells to help the skin look clear and vibrant. Plus, liquid chlorophyll can also kill bad germs and bacteria found within the body which can help clear existing breakouts as well as prevent more breakouts from occurring.

Directions:

  • Add 1 tsp. of liquid chlorophyll to 8oz of water
  • Use a straw and drink quickly to avoid staining your tongue and teeth green
  • Drink up to twice daily

5. Ear Infection Hack:

Garlic
To avoid harmful antibiotics to treat ear infections, try using this pungent plant to find relief. Garlic has been utilized as a natural remedy for thousands of years and is filled with anti-bacterial, anti-oxidizing, anti-microbial, anti septic, and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a holistic marvel for ear infections.

Directions:

  • Use either ear drops with garlic extract, or create your own by crushing one garlic clove and dissolving it in 2 tbsp. of olive oil
  • From there, place a few drops in the ear canal and let sit for 30-35 minutes (provided the eardrum is not ruptured)
  • If you’re unsure if the eardrum is ruptured, cut a clove of garlic in half and place it between two layers of gauze. Then place the gauze and garlic on the outside of the ear for 30 minutes

6. Cuts and Wounds Hack:

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver is used to help heal cuts, burns, sores, and abrasions by killing infection and promoting new skin growth.

Directions:

  • To use, simply dampen a cloth with colloidal silver and dab it on the wound, or moisten a bandage pad with the liquid and adhere it to the skin

7. Congestion or Cough Hack:

Cajeput Oil
Be sure to reach for this Holy Grail oil the next time you catch a cold, as it is quite literally “Vick’s on steroids.” Created from the distillation of fresh leaves and twigs from the Cajeput Tree, cajeput oil strong and refreshing scent is guaranteed to assist in aiding even the worst congestion or coughing fit. If you don’t have this oil on hand, reach for your eucalyptus essential oil for a similar relieving effect.

Directions:

  • For best results, rub oil on the neck, chest, and bottoms of the feet
  • Inhale the scent deeply and allow it to envelop you

8. Hangover Hack:

Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal absorbs impurities, toxins, heavy metals, and just about anything that is not meant to be in the body. This makes it perfect for curing a gnarly hangover as well as easing the symptoms of food poisoning.

Directions:

  • Take the recommended dose of capsules before you go to bed after drinking alcohol and let the charcoal do its thing

Although there are most definitely circumstances where professional medical help is necessary, it’s important to recognize that not all little aches, pains, and problems need a prescribed pill. The holistic approach is instead focused on finding solutions that won’t cause additional harm to the body.

Lastly, remember that the holistic lifestyle is about addressing the body in its entirety. Truly getting better at learning and listening to what your temple is trying to tell you will help you connect deeply to the needs of your body.
