Use These Essential Oils to Treat 10 Common Skin Conditions

More and more people are turning to natural ingredients and essential oils to treat common ailments. Among many health benefits, essential oils can be used to help treat many common skin conditions. From acne or redness to insect bites and even age spots, essential oils are a natural way to keep your skin healthy.

You may have noticed that expensive, high-end skin creams, moisturizers and serums, etc boast that they “contain” many popular essential oils. But why not skip the harmful chemicals also found in many of these products and instead go straight to the healing source itself – the pure essential oils! Not only can this transition save you money, but it can also save your skin and your health overall!

Here are 10 common skin conditions and the essential oils to help treat them:

 

1. Acne

Acne is an exceedingly common skin condition that affects the skin’s oil glands. These glands produce a substance called sebum and are connected to the pores by a canal called a follicle.
 
When the follicle of a skin gland clogs up with excess sebum, it creates a bacterial plug which in turn induces skin swelling. The result? Acne. Thus, due to its disinfecting properties, tea tree oil can be a powerful aid in treating acne.
 
Essential oils:
Tea tree oil is antimicrobial, antiseptic and antifungal, so it helps treat the acne you already have. Tea trea also helps prevent new breakouts from forming.
 
How to apply:
Mix 12 drops of 100% pure tea tree oil, 2 tablespoons of 100% aloe vera and ½ teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to your skin at bedtime. Or create your own face wash using tea tree oil as the base. Just remember that essential oils are highly concentrated, so a little goes a very long way.
 
 

2. Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that causes the affected area to become red, dry, rough, and often times very itchy. Sometimes this itching is so unbearable that people will incessantly scratch the areas, causing it to bleed. These symptoms of acute dryness and irritation can be calmed by rose essential oil.
 
Essential oil:
The anti-inflammatory compounds in rose oil help promote healing and refine the skin’s texture to reduce the roughness caused from eczema.
 
How to apply:
Rose essential oil can also help your skin to retain necessary water, so you can fill a spray bottle with rose oil and water and spray whenever your skin is feeling dry or irritated. Apply directly to the affected area using a carrier oil, such as coconut oil.
 
 

3. Cellulite

Cellulite refers to the lumpy, dimpled skin on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen, and is most common in adolescent and adult women. It’s caused by accumulated fat cells that are pushed up against the skin, creating uneven indentations.
 
While not considered painful, cellulite is another skin condition that causes more insecurity than physical harm. Aside from a healthy diet and exercise routine, juniper oil is known to aid in the treatment of cellulite removal.
 
Essential oil:
Juniper oil can decrease inflammation and increase blood flow. It contains calcium, potassium, and zinc, which are sometimes injected under the skin to help break up cellulite fat.
 
How to apply:
Mix one drop of juniper oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil. Gently massage onto areas of the body with cellulite once a day for best results.
 
 

4. Bug Bites

Bug bites – whether from mosquitoes, gnats, fire ants, or even flies – can cause severe discomfort, swelling and itching. Although usually minor, these symptoms are often enough to take the fun out of any outdoor adventure.
 
Essential oils can help you find relief from any of these itchy bug bites.
 
Essential oil:
Lavender essential oil is anti-inflammatory and has antiseptic qualities to help reduce any current irritation from the bite, and also prevent it from getting worse.
 
How to apply:
To find relief from a bug bite, apply lavender essential oil to the bite as soon as possible.
 

 
 

5. Wrinkles

Wrinkles generally come from the natural process of aging. However, there are many environmental factors that worsen existing wrinkles and create additional ones, like overexposure to sunlight, stress, and smoking cigarettes.
 
Although there’s little you can do to slow down the natural process of aging and the wrinkles that come with it, using certain essential oils can help prevent new wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of existing ones.
 
Essential oils:
Sandalwood oil and frankincense oil both help to soften dry skin and diminish the appearance of fine lines by promoting the formation of new skin cells.
 
How to apply:
Mix three-five drops of either oil with an unscented moisturizer (or coconut oil) and apply to your skin up to two times daily. Avoid coming in contact with your eyes.
 
 

6. Age spots

Age spots are flat in shape, brown or black in color, painless, and can appear on any area of the skin that’s exposed to sunlight. They’re primarily caused by aging skin color changes (common after the age of 40), and direct UV light. The good news is these age spots be can lightened by using frankincense oil.
 
Essential oil:
Frankincense aids in healing by creating new skin cells and promoting a faster rate of cell division, which in turn promotes a faster skin healing.
 
How to apply:
Apply frankincense oil directly to your age spots, or for more sensitive skin areas (like your face and neck), apply with a carrier oil. Repeat daily for best results.
 
 

7. Stretch marks

Stretch marks are caused by the stretching and inelasticity of the skin, most commonly appearing on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks, and thighs. Their severity is affected by things such as genetics, physical stress, and cortisone levels.
 
Although they’re painless, stretch marks often become a form of insecurity to those who develop them. With the use of helichrysum oil, these pesky marks will begin to fade and become much less noticeable.
 
Essential oil:
Helichrysum is a diuretic, astringent, analgesic, antispasmodic, and potent anti-inflammatory, which helps to improve blood circulation and damaged skin.
 
How to apply:
Mix 3-5 drops of helichrysum oil with one tablespoon of coconut oil. Slowly massage into the affected areas of your skin. Repeat daily for best results.
 
 

8. Rosacea

Rosacea is a common long-term skin condition that causes redness, predominantly on the face. It’s most prevalent in women and people with fair skin, and most often starts to affect people as they age.
 
Symptoms of rosacea include frequent redness or flushing, acne, as well as a swollen nose, and red lines under the skin. There are currently no known causes of rosacea, and there is no “cure,” using essential oils like chamomile oil can help heal the affected area and reduce redness.
 
Essential oil:
Chamomile is anti-inflammatory and is known to calm irritation and reduce the redness of your skin.
 
How to apply:
The best way to use chamomile oil is to mix three drops with ½ a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply twice daily. Apply the mixture after bathing or anytime during the day to refresh and soothe your skin.
 
 

9. Sunburn

Sunburns occur after overexposure to UV Rays from the sun or tanning beds. Typically the skin is hot to the touch, sore, and begins to peel days and sometimes even weeks after exposure. While it’s important to stay hydrated and remove some of the heat from the body via cold water, adding chamomile oil or lavender essential oil after too much fun in the sun will relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
 
Essential oil:
Lavender is anti-inflammatory and soothes sensitive skin caused by sunburns. Chamomile is also inflammatory. It’s an astringent and full of flavonoids and antioxidants – all good for sunburn pain relief.
 
How to apply:
For larger areas of the body: Mix five drops of chamomile oil and three tablespoons of coconut oil and stir into cool bath water and soak in the water for roughly 15-20 minutes (excessive soaking can further dry out sunburned skin).
 
For smaller areas of the body: Mix one drop of chamomile oil with one half teaspoon of coconut oil (or preferred carrier oil), and gently rub the mixture directly onto the affected area.
 
 

10. Dandruff

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition in which skin flakes from the scalp. It can be caused from several reasons including: oily skin, dry skin, not shampooing frequently enough, malassezia (yeast like fungus), or simply oversensitivity to haircare products. Rosemary oil is an easy way to rid your head of dandruff and promote a healthy scalp.
 
Essential oil:
Rosemary helps to remove the fungus on the scalp that causes dandruff. It’s also good for promoting hair follacle growth, so it’s a win-win! Apply it with a bit of coconut oil to help hydrate the scalp.
 
How to apply:
After showering, apply 5 drops of rosemary oil (option to use a carrier oil) to your scalp and massage vigorously.
 
 
It’s clear to see – skincare and the health of your skin does not need to be a complicated, expensive, or stressful experience. Often times, the thing your skin is craving the most is simply pure, natural elements supplied to us by Mother Earth.
 
So the next time you’re about to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest “miracle cream” or begging the universe to “make that zit go away before tomorrow,” remember . . . there are essential oils that can help with that!
